D - Drugged

My focus for the Tenth Anniversary of A-Z April Challenge is all about heart.

Reflections of a life well lived is an extract from a series of poems which venture to encapsulate my emotions in situations in which I have found myself throughout my life.

Drug abuse is a very real issue and danger in today's society. More than ever, all sorts of mind-bending opioids are being made available.  Don't for one moment think that the drugs which are causing damage are only illicit ones which are hard to come by. Anything and everything is being tried by the youth and adults alike, to get a 'high'. The problem of drug abuse is many-fold: (1) criminal elements introducing young people to drugs; (2) an education system which lauds feelings above facts; (3) the entitlement of the 'me' culture; (4) a 'feeling' of hopelessness which is also pushed on people to control them. The list goes on and on. I'm not even going to start on drugging 'tinies' in school because educators don't know how to deal with active children.

Do I have an answer? No! I wish I did! Turning to God and Jesus is the very best way I know of how to deal with this destructive epidemic. I pray for release of drug addicted people. I also thank God that none of my children has ever become addicted to drugs. One of them has smoked marijuana with friends but, as related to me -

"I knew how you felt about drugs, Mom and, when I smoked it, I felt bad so I went inside and opened the Bible [an unusual occurrence, actually]. The passage I opened to was 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. 'Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.' I got such a fright, Mom, that I told everyone that they had to leave and that we don't do drugs in this house." Thank You Lord!

DRUGGED

They
They call it drug abuse
Alcoholism
Opioid
Dope
Drug Addiction!

What do or want they to know
Of
Inadequacy?
Identity?
Or
Lack thereof?

The system always provides
Not only hard drugs
Household names too
Painkillers
Glue

It’s easy and it starts in youth
Growing up is hard to do
Emotions run riot
What is love?
What is care?

Smoking weed
Having a drink
Mainlining hash
Morphine
Heroin
Cocaine
Opium
Poppies are oh so good

The feeling is adequacy
Expression of subconscious illusion
Vision
Shape
Form
Identity!

So
They call it drug abuse
Alcoholism
Opioid
Dope
Drug Addiction!

The system always provides
Not only hard drugs
Household names too
Painkillers
Glue

  1. Hi popped in to see how you're doing, not too bad as far as I can tell. Quite a profound poem, kinda anti-establishment in a way. Nice one.
    Blessings Fe, Geoff.
